Outlander star Sam Heughan's £1m mansion in the history-soaked Scottish countryside

The star's Scottish home just north of Glasgow is surrounded by 2000 years of history, including links to a real life 18th century hero whose adventures were every bit as wild as those of Jamie Fraser,

Sam Heughan reportedly paid a cool £1million in 2021 to buy a remodelled 18th century farmhouse in the countryside north of Glasgow.

The luxury property was originally built as a coaching inn with stables in 1775 around the start of the American Revolutionary War. Fittingly, in the upcoming Season 7 Jamie and Claire Fraser will be caught up in the turmoil of this bloody conflict.

Although the C-listed home is on the listed buildings register maintained by Historic Scotland, it has been lavishly renovated and boasts 900 square feet of living space including a mezzanine level with gym – perfect for the 42-year-old fitness buff.As befits a global TV and movie star, the compound on the outskirts of Bishopbriggs in East Dunbartonshire is also well protected with electric gates, high walls and the latest in home security.

It is just 12 miles from the Wardpark Studios at Cumbernauld where the hit Starz time-travelling drama is filmed and three miles from the bright lights of central GlasgowHeughan and his neighbours enjoy stunning views of the Campsie Fells, which form a forbidding natural barrier 2,000 feet high and are often said to mark the boundary of the Highlands.

Two thousand years ago, Roman sentries stood guard along the Antonine Wall and gazed northwards at this same vista, watching out for the next Pictish raiding party.Rain storms flood in from the Atlantic and if the Campsies are shrouded in low cloud then people in Glasgow know it's about to rain. The legionnaires maybe noticed the same thing and thought longingly of their homes in warmer, drier climes.
