The beloved period drama will be back on Christmas day. BBC drama Call the Midwife has released a first look at the upcoming Christmas special. The holiday episode will be released on December, 25 before the start of a brand new season.

Last week, the official Call the Midwife social media accounts released a sneak peek photo of this year's festive episode. The picture showed the three main actresses, Leonie Elliott, Helen George and Megan Cusack, taking part in the "fine British tradition" of a snowball fight. While the midwives cheerfully throw snowballs at the "poor photographer", the post hinted that the Christmas special is looking "fantastic" and the work for series 12 is well underway. The caption read: "Our ladies prepare for the forthcoming festive season in traditional winter fashion!

"Hello all! Today we’re delighted to give you this first behind-scenes photo peek at the new Call the Midwife Christmas Special. And for their first Christmas photo session, our cast – Leonie Elliott (Lucille), Helen George (Trixie) and Megan Cusack (Nancy) – subjected our poor photographer to a fine British tradition – the snowball fight!

"We’re delighted to confirm that the results of our team’s hard work on the Christmas Special is looking FANTASTIC, and we just can’t wait to show you more – so stay tuned to this page, as we start to get ready for our brand new special, and Series 12!!!"The beloved period drama has been commissioned for up until series 13, meaning it will stay on our screens until at least 2024. Yet in an interview with Radio Times, the show's creator Heidi Thomas revealed that the drama "could keep on going" well beyond that point.

"There are so many stories to tell, medically, socially, even emotionally, and I think we could keep on going. The proviso I would give is that at the moment we’re only commissioned for series 12, which we’re halfway through filming, and series 13, which we will make next year," said Thomas.
