Keith Urban was born in New Zealand but raised in Australia. As a child, he took an interest in music and began taking guitar lessons. When he grew up, he appeared as a contestant on the Australian TV talent show New Faces in 1983. He started making a name for himself in the Australian country music scene by appearing on different local TV shows in the latter half of the ‘80s. He eventually landed a record deal with EMI and released his first album Keith Urban in 1990. Four singles from the album charted in Australia.
Urban relocated to Nashville, Tennessee two years later in 1992 to try to make in-roads in the country scene in the states. He started a band, The Ranch, with which he recorded a studio album through Capitol Nashville. Two of the singles from the album charted on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
However, it would be a few years later, in 1999, that Urban would make his American solo debut album, also titled Keith Urban. The album would go on to become certified platinum, producing his first No. 1 song on the Hot Country Songs chart with "But for the Grace of God." With the huge success of this single and his album, Urban was officially a country king.
