Call The Midwife's Peter the policeman star now and why he'll 'definitely' return to show

The star has confirmed he will definitely return at some point.

A much-loved Call the Midwife star left the show in season six - but PC Peter Noakes will "definitely" return to the show at some point, the actor who plays him has promised. The policeman appeared from the very beginning of the BBC1 midwifery drama, when he tried to break up a Poplar street brawl, before being humiliatingly outdone by Sister Evangelina.

The policeman, played by Ben Caplan, went on to become the love interest of nurse and midwife Chummy, played by Miranda Hart. Fans in the show were transfixed by the blossoming romance between the two characters, as their relationship developed all the way from a first date, to walking down the aisle together, before midwife Chummy even welcomed a child of her own.

While Chummy's final appearance was in season 4, Peter was last seen in a season 6 episode of Call the Midwife - but after never reappearing, no reason was given for his absence. In the 2017 Christmas special of the show, it was implied he had left for good as he was simply replaced by Sergeant Wolfe on the police force. But the 49-year-old actor later revealed he had left the drama after a long run to pursue theatre and "edgier" roles, reports The Sun. Nonetheless, the actor promised he would one day return to the show, as he said: "The door is very much open for both myself and Miranda and I'm sure we'll make an appearance again.

"It's been lovely to have been there since the beginning, an amazing roller coaster ride, and I'm honoured to have been part of the whole journey, but there comes a point six years down the line that, as an actor, it's good to keep my foot in with the theatre world and exploring other roles.

"Much as I love playing Peter Noakes, it's great to go off and play some more edgy characters and show a little bit more diversity." Miranda also confirmed she had bowed out of the show, reportedly due to her conflicting work schedules, when she said: "Having shared Chummy's return to CTM, I've not been able to birth (pun) the schedule to make it work."

Since leaving the midwifery drama, Caplan has taken on a series of roles in hit TV shows including Casualty, Midsomer Murders, and Silent Witness - but we're waiting for the moment he reappears as our beloved East End copper.
