'Call The Midwife' season 12 episode 4 recap: quarantines & bureaucracy

Every season, GBH Drama prepares to bring you coverage of the latest and greatest in British dramas. This month, we return to Poplar for the twelfth season of Call The Midwife. With complex medical cases, heartwarming found family, and more births and deaths than we can count, this series is sure to make you laugh and cry (probably more of the latter, if we're being honest). GBH Drama contributor Amanda-Rae Prescott is here to recap the magic as it happens.

This week on Call the Midwife, Nonnatus House has to quickly contain a contagious bacterial infection and also contain the reach of the Board of Health into their affairs. All of this activity makes this a less-than-fun visit home for Timothy and Reggie. Let’s discuss what happens.

Timothy is back in Poplar after becoming the salutatorian of his year at college. We love to see it! Reggie is also back for a visit. Of course, the Turners and Buckles put the youths to work. Timothy hands out tea to the maternity home patients and subs at the reception desk for Miss Higgins. Reggie is cleaning up the comics and doing odd jobs around the store.

Reggie, however, doesn’t seem entirely excited to be home. First off, he cancels a boys night out with Cyril and Fred at the dominoes table. We see a piece of his hair falling out. He visits his mother’s grave because he believes that he may be dying as well; she died after a period of extended fatigue. Violet doesn’t realize his behavior means something may be medically wrong so she calls Reggie “lazy” within earshot. He walks out in disappointment. Cyril convinces him to let Dr. Turner examine him. What will the result be?

Nancy is assigned to Mrs. Khatri who has two little girls and is expecting a third baby. She’s clearly beginning labor, so Nancy walks her to the maternity home. Trixie takes Mrs. Khatri in as her water breaks. Her little girl is born very quickly and they joke about baby’s impatience. Unfortunately, Mrs. Khatri is still experiencing pain after the delivery. Trixie examines and realizes that there is a second heartbeat. She calls for Shelagh to assist since the second baby is in the breech position. Mrs. Khatri was not expecting twins but she is happy to welcome a second baby girl. Her husband, however, is struggling to come up with names since he believed the baby was going to be a boy. The tension between the Khatris grows.
