Alan Rickman's Diary Excerpts Reveal Why He Continued To Play Snape & It'll Make You Emotional

 If this line doesn’t tear your heart after every time you hear/read it, then your love for the Harry Potter franchise is questionable.JK Rowling engulfed us into her wizarding world and kept us hooked on to it for over a decade. Out of all the beloved characters from this franchise, the one that had the most interesting trajectory was Professor Severus Snape played by Alan Rickman.





Most of us loathed him throughout the series only to find out the hidden truth in the end that he was just a bad guy on the exterior. Unfortunately, just when we warmed up towards his onscreen character of Snape, we got the rudest shock that he was terminal in real life as he was battling prostate cancer.Recently, excerpts from Alan Rickman’s journal were released and they offer interesting insights into the late actor’s decade-long journey through the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise.


The diary entries, which span 25 years of Rickman's life, will be published as a book, Madly, Deeply: The Diaries of Alan Rickman, which will be out Oct. 4.According to Variety, the journal excerpts also revealed the reason why he continued to play the role of Professor Snape across eight movies.It was before the production began for the fifth movie of the franchise,‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' that Rickman was forced to confront health issues. 


The excerpts, published by The Guardian, reveal that the actor was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer in 2005 and began to receive treatment.According to Variety, doctors decided to remove his entire prostate, with surgery occurring at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. in January of 2006. Weeks after getting released from the hospital, Rickman wrote an entry in his journal revealing his decision to stay on as the notorious gloomy Potions professor.
