Actress Amy Hill recently spoke with NBC Insider and revealed Kumu might not be the biggest fan of Higgins and Magnum coupling up..Magnum P.I. star Amy Hill's character Teuila “Kumu” Tuileta might be a curator for the mysterious Robin Masters' estate, but she's so much more than that.
Throughout the past few seasons, Kumu has proven to be an invaluable investigative resource for Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez) as he's worked to solve cases in the tropical locale of Hawaii. Having grown up on the island, she's able to offer insight into the flora and fauna, as well as the cultural background of the island that her family has called home since the 1700s. This close working relationship has since turned into a friendship with Hernandez's Magnum — both on and off the screen.
Hill spoke with NBC Insider's Stephanie Gomulka about the series — airing on NBC Sundays at 9/8c — sharing that the cast is just as close behind the scenes. This is due in part to the COVID-19 restrictions, which limited the people the cast could interact with in their free time. As Hill explained, "We really clung to each other."We hang out with each other a lot and we genuinely like each other and the people that [all the co-stars] chose to be with," Hill said, "whether it's their wives or their boyfriends or whatever. We genuinely like each other and seek each other out."
Speaking of boyfriends, Hill shared Kumu's thoughts on the blossoming relationship between partners Magnum and Juliet Higgins (Perdita Weeks), who finally got together in the Season 4 finale. To put it plainly, Kumu is hesitant to give the partners her blessing. I don't know if it's gonna work. I'm sort of the naysayer in the bunch. I'm happy for them, but it's not necessarily fully like, 'Wow, finally.' I don't think Kumu feels that way," Hill explained. Kumu is coming from a place of concern though, as she doesn't "want anybody's heart broken and I think that will really mess up the relationship as partners." In general, Kumu wants the best for everyone, noting that Rick Wright (Zachary Knighton) and Theodore “TC” Calvin (Stephen Hill) are going through relationship woes of their own.
New dad Wright is still learning to balance fatherhood with work, as his relationship with Suzy (Betsy Phillips) hangs in the balance. I really want that to work because I know they're both conflicted, but I think there's a child involved," Hill said. "And my character never had a child, so there's a part of me that wants for that child [and] for them to have a good relationship. All Hill could say about TC is that he's "floundering," but she hopes he finds someone sooner than later.
