Doug Jones reveals that, when he was offered a role on Star Trek: Discovery, he was told his character Saru was Discovery's version of Spock.
Actor Doug Jones was told that his character in Star Trek: Discovery was considered the Spock of the series. Discovery is the seventh television series in the Star Trek franchise, and was the first since Star Trek: Enterprise concluded in 2005. Discovery first premiered in 2017 and has since gone on to spawn a spinoff series of its own, entitled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Discovery season 4 debuted earlier this year, and season 5 is expected to be released sometime in early 2023.
Discovery was praised by critics and Star Trek fans for bringing something new to the franchise, while still sticking with similar conventions that The Original Series was so famous for. The show takes place approximately 10 years before the events of The Original Series, and follows Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the USS Discovery as they traverse not only strange new worlds, but other universes and timelines as well. Alongside Burnham is the First Officer of the Discovery, Saru (Doug Jones), who is the first of his Kelpien species to enter Starfleet. Saru is a fan-favorite Discovery character for his intellect, loyalty, and initially very skittish nature. Season 3 saw Saru become the captain of the Discovery, before becoming Burnham's First Officer in season 4.
In an interview with The Summit (via StarTrek.com), Jones reveals that Saru is internally considered to be the Spock of Discovery. He says that, while the character he was offered to play wouldn't be Vulcan, he would essentially become the series' Spock - an alien onboard a ship of mostly humans, who is a high-ranking intellectual.
