They are never ever ever getting back together.New Amsterdam fans who were hoping for a reconciliation between Dr Lauren Bloom and Dr Leyla Shinwari will be sorely disappointed.

In the medical drama's fifth and final season, it seems to be truly over for the characters played by Janet Montgomery and Shiva Kalaiselvan. The season premiere saw Lauren asking Leyla if she could stay in the spare room after her couch surfing. Though Leyla accepts, she makes it clear there's no chance of them getting back together as she is now seeing someone else. It's over," showrunner David Schulner confirmed to TVLine.

We told their story for two seasons, and they changed each other in such profound ways," he continued, admitting "there was poison in the well – from the start. And it would have hurt them both if they kept going back to it.The poison Schulner is referring to is Lauren's favouritism towards Leyla. In previous episodes, Lauren crossed the line of what's morally acceptable and donated money to the hospital to create a fifth residency slot for her girlfriend.Leyla ended the relationship right then and there once she found out about the bribe, putting an end to one of the show's favourite romances.

The final season will see Lauren having to deal with someone else who's guaranteed to keep her mind off Leyla: her estranged sister Vanessa (Skins' Kathryn Prescott), who struggles with staying sober and playing by the rules. As we approach the end of the series, we wanted to give each character the opportunity to heal their deepest wounds. And for Bloom, it was abandoning her sister to save herself," Schulner continued. Now Bloom has to confront the damage done and see if she can repair it – even if it means sacrificing her hard-won sobriety."
