Russell Crowe plays a former cop with Alzheimer's in Sleeping Dogs

New Zealander Russell Crowe is considered one of the greatest actors of his generation but its fair to say its been a few years since he peaked. I am thinking of films like LA Confidential  Insider  Gladiator  Master & Commander  American Gangster  A Beautfiul Mind or Death Train to Yuma  all of which were released between 1997 and 2007. During that period Crowe received an Oscar nomination for three consecutive years and won the 2001 Gold Statue for Gladiator. Of course Crowe has had some good parts in recent years whether as the vain  lecherous Zeus in Thor Love and Thunder  the psychopath in Unhinged or the controversial former Fox CEP Roger Ailes in the miniseries The Loudest Voice .  but he rarely reached the class of his earlier works.

Interestingly the recently announced crime thriller Sleeping Dogs  not to be confused with the video game of the same name which is also set to be made into a film  sees Crowe playing former homicide detective Roy Freeman  who suffers from early stage Alzheimers and whose life is shattered when a Death penalty suspect Freeman caught ten years ago suddenly pleads innocent. Freeman becomes curious and fights his progressing illness in order to reopen the case with his former partner and get to the bottom of the truth. Along the way, he makes some startling discoveries.

Sleeping Dogs is the film adaptation of EO Chirovicis bestselling book The Book of Mirrors which has been translated into 37 languages and Crowes character Freeman is just one of several central characters in the three act novel. Other actors are not yet known. Adam Cooper will make his directorial debut with the film and co wrote the screenplay with Bill Collage. The two co-wrote the screenplays for the flops Assassins Creed and Exodus: Gods and Kings . Filming is expected to begin in January 2023.
