Call The Midwife's Fred Buckle's backstory explored in newly discovered manuscript

 Call The Midwife author Jennifer Worths daughter found a manuscript which was titled  fifth book giving people an insight into the life of the loveable character Fred Buckle.





Fred Buckle  played by Cliff Parisi has been the caretaker of Nonnatus House in the BBC drama since 2012 as viewers have watched the kind-hearted characters story develop over the years. Although fans are aware of Freds difficult upbringing his entire backstory has now been unearthed through a mystery manuscript. The hit show Call The Midwife is based on the best selling trilogy written by Jennifer Worth all about her work as a nurse in the poverty stricken East End of London in the 1950s.Although some of the characters and situations that happened in the first few series of the show are based on her memoirs the majority is a work of fiction by creator Heidi Thomas.


Sadly Jennifer died one year before Call The Midwife aired in 2011 which saw Jessica Raine play her in the first few seasons. With the show entering its 12 series at the start of the year viewers have watched and fallen in love with the characters show including caretaker Fred Buckle. Fans know little about his upbringing other than he had a difficult childhood with little money. However after Jennifers daughter Suzannah discovered a manuscript titled  fifth book people could be learning a lot more about the caretaker of Nonnatus House .After her mother death 10 years ago people are now getting a backstory on Fred’s life in a new book called Toffee Apples and Quail Feathers.


From his childhood, odd jobs, different careers and how he found love people will learn more about the lovable character.In an extract from the new book from The Mirror fans will uncover that his father died before he was born and his mother never married after. Claiming to be too busy for courting the duo lived in a small one room place which was never heated during the cold months. A snippet from the book reads   What little money she managed to earn during those lean years was spent on the rent. A few clothes to keep them decent and food the best of which she gave to her son.
